Five years ago, notorious journalist Christopher Hitchens wrote an article in Vanity Fair claiming that “woman aren’t funny.” But with venues across the country booking more female comics than ever, with the raging success of mainstream comediennes like Chelsea Handler, Kathy Griffin and Sarah Silverman and with more of NYC and LA’s funniest female comedians being snapped up for top notch TV and film projects, it’s hard to imagine that people are responding this enthusiastically to people who aren’t funny.
Therefore it seems appropriate that one of NYC’s most celebrated comediennes and improvisers, Glennis McMurray (I Eat Pandas, Baby Wants Candy), decided to start a site dedicated to women kicking ass in comedy. The site, TheGLOC.net, stands for “Gorgeous Ladies of Comedy.” It’s stated mission is “to feature the glorious, glamorous, strange and wonderful endeavors of the lady folk in comedy across the globe.”

G.L.O.C. has already recruited many accomplished female humorists to participate and contribute, including Brandy Barber (Assistant Editor), Liz Black, Giulia Rozzi, Caitlin Tegart, Shannon O’Neil, Katina Corrao, Nicole Drespel, Leila Cohan-Miccio and Ariel Karlin. On the site you can find articles, interviews, show listings and lots of other content geared towards women in comedy, but entertaining for anyone.
G.L.O.C. is throwing its official launch party this Thursday, March 31st from 6-8pm at 92Y Tribeca (200 Hudson Street @ Canal), with “drinks, dancing, makeovers, manicures, raffle prizes and swag bags full of goodies to help celebrate the launch of TheGLOC.net!” Tickets available here.
Performing on the show will be such G.L.O.C.’s as Kristen Schaal (The Daily Show), Jane Borden (Editor, Time Out NY Comedy), Kambri Crews (author, Love, Daddy) and the unique comedy of Adira Amram & The Experience.
Sure, comedy still seems like a boy’s club sometimes. But maybe it’s the boys who have some catching up to do. After all, where’s the “Gorgeous Men of Comedy” site?
