National UnFriend Day on Facebook

Personally, I don’t know what Jimmy Kimmel is talking about. I call each and every one of my 291 Facebook friends, 107 Friendster friends, and my remaining 126 MySpace friends who haven’t deleted their accounts yet, every day. We also, all 524 of us, meet every Saturday morning for a picnic in the Sheep Meadow in Central Park.
In fact, I don’t know what I’d do without the constant support and encouragement I get from all of them through the 524 text messages I get every hour letting me know what a pleasure it is to be my friend.
Yet, judging by this clip from Jimmy Kimmel Live, it seems like not everyone has had the same experience with social networking that I have.
As Kimmel puts it, “Remember five years ago when no one had Facebook and you didn’t know what the guy you took high school biology with was having for lunch? Remember how that was fine? Let’s go back”
In the spirit of that, Kimmel has declared November 17, 2010, “National UnFriend Day on Facebook.” Here’s Jimmy Kimmel and William Shatner with the announcement.
I want to participate, but just can’t bear the thought of cutting anyone out of my close-knit circle of 524. Oh, wait, there’s always Melvin, one of my Facebook friends. Sorry, Melvin, it just seems we’ve drifted apart since you first friended me in 2008. Plus, you really shouldn’t have skipped two picnics in a row. Poor form.
And here’s another segment on “National UnFriend Day on Facebook” featuring Eastbound & Down’s Danny McBride.
